PRINT
- Resolution should be 300 dpi (dots per inch)
- Sizes are usually done by paper eg A5, A4, A3, etc
- Colour mode should be CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), as these are the realworld colours used to print
- There should be margins when printing via a home/office printer as they cannot print right to the edge of the page
- There should be a bleed when printing via a printing server, which is an overprint to ensure all of the page is covered right to the edge
SCREEN
- Resolution for basic web should be 72 dpi
- Resolution for retina devices (eg latest 4k/5k devices) should be 144 dpi
- Resolution for super retina (eg very fancy iPhones) should be 216 dpi
- Colour mode should be RGB (Red, Green, Blue) as these are the colours screens work on
- Margins and bleeds aren’t really relevant
- PNGs can have transparent backgrounds
- JPEGs cannot have transparent backgrounds
- All logos and art files should be provided as vectors, which means they can be rescaled (made bigger or larger) infinitely
- Vector file types include AI, EPS, SVG
Basic rule is you can always make something smaller and/or lower resolution, but you can never make something bigger and/or higher resolution.*
